QAS Support
Thanks to the financial assistance provided to me by the Queensland Academy of Sport, I will now be able to have my coach Gary Bourne join me to support me over the final 4 weeks of my European campaign leading up to the World Athletics Final and the World Cup. I am very appreciative of the support the QAS have continually provided me since 1996, when I first became a scholarship holder.
The decentralisation of support for athletes (rather than only basing athletes at the AIS) is a brilliant idea to allow athletes to remain in their own, familiar environment. Support I have received from the QAS includes domestic travel to meets each year, reimbursement of medical costs, the use of their excellent facilities and services (including the very well equiped gym and fantastic biomechanics support), international travel support for my coach in 2002 and also providing a QC to represent me when Nicole Boegman appealled my position on the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Team (which preserved my position on the team).
Although the QAS does not have a formal Track and Field program, thankfully their individual scholarships allow track and field athletes to continue to access such great support.
