Credit to our Coaches
Our sport relies heavily on the goodwill of others. Athletics is dependent on volunteers on all levels - for officials, coaches, management, supporters and naturally the athletes. Without dismissing the contributions of all the others, I’d like to focus on our coaches for a moment.
There are so many great athletics coaches throughout Australia who miss out on the recognition (and remuneration) they deserve. We often take our coaches’ contributions to our sport for granted - their effort, time and passion.
The selflessness required to be one of these great coaches is an admirable attribute. My coach, Gary Bourne has been recognised by Athletics Australia for his tireless coaching efforts. Athletics Australia has introduced merit-based funding for coaches whose athletes achieve on an international stage whilst also supporting rising juniors. Although no dollar figure can show my appreciation for Gary, merit-based funding is a great way to reward the coaches who produce results and hopefully it will assist him to continue to produce great results for his athletes.
Our development as athletes and even as individuals would be very different without our coaches. Our coach’s expertise in writing programs, providing technical feedback and being supportive is vital to our development and our sport.
I think it is time for everyone’s coach to be recognised. This doesn’t need to be financially or formally recognised by an organisation – you can provide your coach with some recognition by showing your appreciation. A simple “thank you is a great start. Breed success in our sport by keeping our coaches passionate; make sure your coach is appreciated!
On behalf of your squad, thanks for being an amazing coach Gary!
